Journals & Book Series

A welcome from the Managing Editor

Professor Mike J. Grimble introduces the four Wiley journals he edits, with a summary of each journal's scope and advice for new authors.

Wiley Journals — Editor in Chief

International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear ControlSince 1991

Robust control systems theory and design, including nonlinear and data-driven methods.

Concerned with the theory of model-based robust control systems theory and design, whether or not the system includes nonlinearities. Papers on data-driven control and machine learning are also encouraged. Submissions are expected to address control design issues and include a control design example, normally (but not exclusively) for engineering applications. Established in 1991, published by John Wiley & Sons.

International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal ProcessingSince 1987

Advances in adaptive control, filtering, and estimation for engineering and industrial systems.

Focused on novel advances in adaptive control, adaptive filtering, and estimation. Signal processing topics of interest are those concerned with problems in adaptive control or filtering. Application examples are normally related to engineering and industrial systems, including condition and fault monitoring using model-based or data-driven methods. Established in 1987, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Optimal Control Applications and MethodsSince 1980

New developments in optimal control theory and optimization methods.

Focused on new developments in optimal control design methods, including novel advances in optimal control theory that are general and suitable for applications. New developments in optimization algorithms are encouraged, including AI-inspired methods, though the use of an optimization algorithm alone is not sufficient to qualify a paper for publication. Established in 1980, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Advanced Control for ApplicationsSince 2019

Advanced control and estimation methods across industrial, automotive, aerospace, and marine applications.

Aims to promote the development of advanced control and estimation methods that can improve industrial and other control applications. Papers should focus on novel control design and optimization methods that provide performance improvements, spanning industrial process control, automotive systems, aerospace and defence, medical robotics, energy systems, and marine applications. Suitable papers normally introduce the mathematical basis of the synthesis and design problems, and include an applications study or example involving model descriptions, design procedures, and representative simulation results. Established in 2019, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Springer Book & Monograph Series — Series Editor

Advances in Industrial Control

A monograph series on applied control methods, bridging academia and industry.

A monograph series focusing on the applications of advanced and novel control methods, with worldwide distribution to engineers, researchers, and libraries. The series promotes the exchange of information between academia and industry — each book demonstrates a theoretical aspect of an advanced or new control method and shows how it can be applied, either in a pilot plant or a real industrial situation. "Industrial" is interpreted broadly, applying not only to processes in industrial plants but to systems such as machinery controls, avionics, and automotive systems.

Advanced Textbooks in Control and Signal Processing

Textbooks for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in control and signal processing.

Designed to present ideas in control and signal processing in a manner suitable for students and tutors on advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Subject matter may be theoretical or applied, but must be suitable for learning at this level — the series takes a long view of a subject rather than covering the latest cutting-edge research. Volumes are designed to be adopted as classroom textbooks, often augmented with accessory material such as MATLAB® files or PDF slides for teaching, and are peer reviewed with classroom tuition in mind.

Nonlinear Industrial Control Systems book cover

Nonlinear Industrial Control Systems

Optimal Polynomial Systems and State-Space Approach — Michael J. Grimble & Paweł Majecki, Springer, 2020

Presents a range of mostly optimisation-based methods for severely nonlinear systems, covering feedforward and feedback control and tracking control systems design. Plant models and design algorithms are provided in a MATLAB® toolbox, enabling both academic examples and industrial application studies to be repeated and evaluated. Makes nonlinear control theory accessible to readers with only a background in linear systems.

Industrial Control Systems Design book cover

Industrial Control Systems Design

Michael J. Grimble, Wiley, 2001

Bridges the gap between research and industry, systematically presenting advances in control and estimation with an emphasis on applications. Includes design case studies from the steel, marine, process control, aerospace, and power generation sectors, and covers predictive optimal control, safety-critical control design, and combined fault monitoring and control techniques.
